In her children's literature periodical, The Guardian of Education, Trimmer introduced the terms "Books for Children" (for those under fourteen) and "Books for Young Persons" (for those between fourteen and twenty-one), establishing terms of reference for young adult literature that still remain in use. One early writer to recognize young adults as a distinct age group was Sarah Trimmer, who, in 1802, described "young adulthood" as lasting from ages 14 to 21. But in the 1960s the novels developed to more fully examining the lives of adolescents. Initially the YA genre "tended to feature the same" boy and girl love story. NYPL librarian, Margaret Scoggin, changed the name of her library journal column from 'Books for Older Boys and Girls' to 'Books for Young Adults', and the genre was christened with a name that has lasted to this day". The NYPL first annual Books for Young People list was sent in 1929 "to schools and libraries across the country". Librarians not literary critics first defined this new category of fiction, "in particular librarians from the New York Public Library". The designation of young adult fiction was originally developed by librarians to help teenagers make the transition between children's and adult literature, following the recognition, around World War II, of teenagers as a distinct group of young people.Īccording to author and academic Michael Cart: "Like jazz, the Broadway musical, and the foot-long hot dog, young adult literature is an American gift to the world, an innovative, groundbreaking genre". Stories that focus on the challenges of youth may be categorized as problem novels or coming-of-age novels. The YA category includes most of the genres found in adult fiction, with themes that include friendship, sexuality, drugs and alcohol, and sexual and gender identity. The characters and subject matter has particular relevance to the lives of teenagers. While the genre is targeted at adolescents, a 2012 study found that 55% of YA readers were adults.
